The Naive Ear
A guest just used the term on screen as if everyone knows it. Ask the obvious question on the audience's behalf — fast, plain, and without apologizing for asking. "What's a tannin?" beats "Could you perhaps unpack that concept for those less familiar?"
A good rep
- Plain words, roughly six or fewer, ending in a question mark.
- No apology, no hedge. "Sorry, dumb question, but…" is a missed rep even if the question that follows is good — the apology un-licenses the audience you're asking for.
- Genuinely basic. If the expert could answer "it's exactly what it sounds like" and you'd be fine, you asked at the right altitude.
